Cooper Corporation, a prominent global OEM supplier in a variety of engine components has announced its latest technical collaboration with Ricardo UK, to launch its new line of cutting edge Cooper engines.
Ricardo UK, one of the leading independent technology and strategic consulting provider to the world’s transportation and clean energy industries has designed this world class engine family (2, 4 and 6 cylinder engines) for Cooper Corporation Pvt. Ltd. The Cooper engines are a great example of technology transfer and collaborative R&D between UK and India. Ricardo was responsible for the overall design of the engine and Cooper developed all the components for the engine, assembled it and also conducted the required engine tests. The Government of Maharashtra has conferred the status of “Mega Project” to Cooper Corporation state-of-the-art engine plant at Satara, Maharashtra. This engine plant has a total production capacity of 24000 engines per year and will be sold in both, the Indian and global markets.
“This CRDI engine entails an electronic engine management system and is designed to work with a wide range of applications like automotive engines, power gensets, forklift trucks, earth moving equipment, dewatering pump sets and agricultural pump sets. This world class Cooper engine is designed and developed with a combination of best in class technologies and meeting emission legislation far ahead of current Indian requirements (Euro IV, US EPA Tier IV interim and CPCB Stage 2). The engine uses advanced technologies and features that make it highly fuel efficient, very low on emissions, compliant with today’s and future emission standards, robust and durable, easy to service & maintain, excellent in terms of noise & vibration reduction,” said Farookh Cooper, Chairman and Managing Director, Cooper Corporation.
The Cooper engine was developed using the most advanced computer aided engineering and simulation tools. Performance & emissions were optimised using wave simulation software, FE analysis was used for structural and thermal simulation, Fluid simulation with Ricardo’s Vectis CFD software was used to optimise the combustion system, cooling strategy and EGR mixing and air flow. So not just the engines itself which are modern and state‑of-the-art, but also the processes and tools used to develop it are most advanced.
Performance & emissions of the new Cooper engines are not just state of the art but also exceptional. The engines currently meet Bharat IV for automotive and it can be upgraded to meet even tougher norms in the future. The engines are also designed for excellent longevity. The cast iron cylinder block, bed plate and cylinder head are all manufactured by Cooper Corporation. The B10 life of the engine is 7000h. The vehicle engine life is 2,50,000 km. The engine is also very easy to service. All service points are on one side. Hydraulic latch adjusters help avoid the periodic tappet clearance checks. The oil change period is 500 hours. The performance regarding noise vibration and harshness is excellent. The cast iron cylinder block, the full bedplate and the balancer shaft solution are instrumental in achieving this superior NVH performance.
Cooper has also developed Gas engines to operate on LPG and CNG as well. The present range of 2, 4 and 6 cylinder engines will be path breaking as they are designed with the future in mind, both for domestic and export markets. These are ideally suited for both genset and automotive applications.
