Claim carbon credits by refurbishing storage batteries

Harinder Mohan Singh, Founder & Director, Voltaredox (Effulgent BR Resources), in an interview, explains the difference between battery refurbishing and battery recycling. He further highlights how organisations have transformed their journey towards sustainability amid pandemic. Excerpts… How would you differentiate the recycling process of Li-ion and lead-acid batteries for energy storage and management? Lead-acid batteries are almost 200-year old and one of the inexpensive methods of energy storage technology available. Interestingly, they are only one-third of the total cost of Li-ion batteries. Primarily because, Lead is a recyclable metal and can be reused as many times, but we are yet to avail technologies and methods to recycle Li-ion batteries. This is the key reason why Li-ion batteries are expensive than lead-based storages How is your organisation aiming to help sectors using batteries to move more towards sustainability? Our organisation helps by offering cost reduction support to industries. BSI Israel (Voltaredox) is a pioneer in old batteries refurbishment, and in India, Voltaredox has been successfully doing this since July 2017. Our company has covered Delhi’s NCR automobiles’ main and component two and four-wheeler manufacturing companies, pharmaceutical, solar, railways parts manufacturers, hydro turbine manufacturer, banking, publishing, etc. Refurbishing, recycling and reusing are expected to become a new normal. Which one is the safest option for energy saving and energy management? Refurbishment doubles the life of batteries at one-third of the cost and minimises the carbon footprints. This further allows the companies to claim the carbon credits under CSR, whereas, recycling results into air and water pollution further fuelling the climate impacts. Also, let’s not forget that sulphation results into battery’s poor performance, hence, the refurbishment process reduces the sulphation. The 100 percent patented organic additive then prevents sulphation, thereby extending the battery life by double. How do you evaluate impacts of pandemic for your businesses? How do you plant to mitigate the same? COVID-19 has bound the entire industry to reduce their internal cost, and like I mentioned, we increase the battery life to a double via refurbishments at one-third the cost compared to new batteries. Because of this, we are getting repeated orders and new orders at an increased 300 percent rate. What measures have you been planning to regain the market confidence and strengthen your position in the market? We are garnishing pretty positive responses from the market, especially getting a very good response from the market, especially in the post-COVID scenario. Besides NCR, Delhi, refurbishment productions have already started near Chandigarh and soon, we will start operations in the south of India. BSI Israel’s another refurbishment business branch would be starting its operations in Pune & Hyderabad. — “Lead is a recyclable metal and can be reused as many times, but we are yet to avail technologies and methods to recycle Li-ion batteries.”Harinder Mohan Singh, Founder & Director, Voltaredox (Effulgent BR Resources)
