The Indian market is global already, and we must figure out how to fit into this new market, and prosper.

The year 2016 looks cautiously optimistic for the metal industry. This has been the sentiment for the past few quarter, as most companies expect sales and profitability to increase yet remain concerned about the increased activity. Increased sales also may require additional capital expenditures. Most companies have increased their capital expenditures in the last couple of years in order to meet the demands of increased activity.
Demand is driven by a variety of forces, from introducing new products in the market to the transition to more apt manufacturing operations. “On the metal forming front, we see the quickening pace of innovation, investment in new manufacturing technology and the demand for skilful workforce, altogether predicts a better year for the metal industries in India,” believes Ameer A Munaff, Managing Director, Fein Power Tools India Pvt Ltd.
Indian market is globalMunaff believes India has industries which thrive on the quality of the products global counterparts manufacture and these companies will indirectly promote the importance of improving global competitiveness for Indian metal forming companies.
he says, “The manufacturing companies that will survive and prosper in a global market must have the best raw material inputs and most economical manufacturing methods that is available in abundant and all that is needed is the mind-set to improve and set new standards. As there’s a lot of foreign investment happening in the manufacturing segments, there are expectations to deliver the best.”
The Indian market is global already, and we must figure out how to fit into this new market, and prosper, Munaff points out. The unused potential of this sector and its inherent strengths gave the belief that the Indian machine tool industry can become a significant global player and carve a niche for itself in the high technology sunrise segment of NC or CNC machine and power tools.  However, towards achieving this status, the industry does need to adopt a visionary approach and aim at a stretched goal of exponential growth, which must essentially be export driven,” explains Munaff.
Opportunities and challengesIts a good time for Indian manufacturers to look hard at opportunities to export their products. The major challenge begins within the industry and that is the mind-set worrying about low demand, pressures on margins, obsolete technology have all put stress in the minds of SMEs, fear of their very existence. The limited availability and the inability to raise resources are common in small businesses however, the machine tools sector, is a high financial outlay driven business. Average product costs are greater, gestation period of investments are longer, time to market are higher and a purchasing system that is undeveloped.
The industry which had a technology dependent status now boasts of promising products out of its own research and development efforts.  The recent decrease in imports of machine tools was partly attributed to the growing competition among Indian firms.  However, the Indian market is small and the Indian manufacturers have to build volumes in order to survive at global markets. This issue is of even greater relevance to a large number of SMEs in the sector where a large number of enterprises are manufacturing tiny and small component. It was visualised that in addition to building volumes, the SMEs would also have to upgrade their products and processes in terms of technology and quality in order to remain competitive at both local and global markets. Thus, the machine tool industry faced the dilemma of whether to remain as finished product supplier and face competition from large volume players or become sub-suppliers of components and sub-systems to OEMs.

New launchIMTEX is an annual event that Fein hasn’t missed for years. According to Fein, the event offers incredible opportunities for those working in the metal forming industry to get tuned into the global as well as local market and make connections to help the businesses prosper. It is one platform to learn the pulse of the customer on a direct face-to-face interaction. Fein has been using this platform to launch new innovative products in the market every season and get direct feedback from the customers then and there.
“At IMTEX 2016, Fein will be launching the new economical magnetic metal core drilling machines that are durable and are suitable for twist drilling applications as well,” informs Munaff.
The KBE magnetic core drilling series will come in three variants: KBE 35 – single speed drilling up to 35 mm; KBE 50-2 and KBE 50-2 M – two-speed drilling up to 50 mm. The magnetic base will have a holding force of 12000 N and KBE has the largest stroke range on the market. The KBE series provide an optimum power-to-weight ratio; side changeable feed hand-wheel for usage in narrow or difficult to reach places; integrated coolant tank for longer service life of the tools; made in Germany quality and many more features at most affordable price. All three variants will be on displayed at IMTEX 2016.
