Oil Conservation – The Need of The Day

Today, the industries across the world are operating under severe financial strains. Cost cutting, therefore, assumes very great importance for effectively reducing manufacturing cost. This is almost the need for survival of industry during post COVID-19 days. Lubricant in any industry is a high value item and conserving lubricants can lead to effective cost cutting step in manufacturing.

Lubricating oil in the machine gets contaminated during its usage due to dust, dirt and moisture going into the machine, may be by not having effective breathers and the wear debris created during running of the machine.

In case, mechanical maintenance of the machine is not carried on time, in that case, wear debris is generated. Effective filtration at plant site and thereafter testing the oil also at site is the paramount need of today’s industrial manufacturing. A sound and effective step in cost cutting in manufacturing sector.

5th Generation Oil Filtration Systems are available, which can remove 100 percent suspended impurities, moisture and wear debris and if this oil is tested in the laboratory, which is not very expensive to install at site, the entire system of filtration and laboratory can be done by 1 or 2 people only from the maintenance or lubrication group, can prove to be highly beneficial in cost reduction in any industry today.

Use of FilterTechnik 5th generation oil filtration systems
Filtasorb2 and HIPPO filters are Generation V – bye-pass or full flow filtration systems. With the use of Filtasorb2 or HIPPO filters, one can remove contamination with suspended particles and moisture in various types of oils, e.g. hydraulic oils, turbine oils, transformer oils, gear oils, neat cutting oils and various other types of oils in the range of ISOVG 32 to 460.

According to GTS, this is the only revolutionary filtration system in the world to remove water/moisture, along with dirt, wear particles, etc. from various types of lubricating oils, transformer oils and diesel fuel.

These filtration systems developed by FilterTechnik, UK, removes contaminants upto NAS-3 or ISO Code 14/12/9. It removes complete water from the lube oils. Hence FilterTechnik Filtration Machines, with the help of HIPPO filters or Filtasorb2 remove total contaminants from the lube oils. “We can regenerate oil and reduce almost 40 percent of oil consumption in our plant,” a spokesperson from GTS said.

Economics of filtration (for lubricating oils)
It may be noted that with the use of these filtration machines and filter media of Filtersorb2, the economics of Oil Filtration has been achieved in U.K. and India (as shown in Table 1)
A case study on hydraulic oils: (on maximum contamination levels)
It may be noted that in general the contamination in these oils are like – moisture/water level 1600 ppm and contamination at 23/21/18 i.e. NAS-12 (should be taken as worst case figures for hydraulic oils). Hence, according to GTS, the case study mentioned herewith shall be taken as the worst case scenario – the economics of oil cleaning will be better than Rs.8/- per litre in case of hydraulic oils/transmission oils/turbine oils/compressor oils or any other oil in the range of ISOVG-32 to ISOVG-320 oils. Hence, manufacturing cost reduction by oil filtration is very effective.
